DENNY ECKRICH PARKS IN FARLEY VICTORY LANEFARLEY
SPEEDWAY Denny Eckrich continued his recent hot streak in Eastern Iowa NASCAR Weekly Racing Series action by pulling off the Late Model feature win at the Farley Speedway on Friday July 20th in only his second appearance there in 2001. Scores of changes were made after hotlaps as drivers got their first look at the newly revamped racing surface. Starting on the front row after pulling out early the week before, Eckrich was never challenged after taking the lead at the drop of the green. Brother Dave Eckrich moved into the second slot following a lap ten restart, but was unable to mount a serious charge for the lead, fending defending track champion Jeff Aikey the final 10 laps to finish second. Following Aikey across the line were Gary Webb and Ace Ihm in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Ron Barker avoided a big lap four crash involving several top running cars, then capitalized on others misfortune late in the race to take home his third Modified feature win of the season. The lap four incident was triggered when Jed Hurst slid sideways entering the first corner, causing Russ Olson, Scott Nesteby and Dan Chapman to make hard enough contact to end their evenings. Matt Mish took off when racing resumed, wasily leading Jim Birbridge and Barker until his driveshaft failed on the seventh lap. Burbridge took over the point after the restart, fending off Barker’s pressure until three laps to go. Brubridge held on to second ahead of Larry Herring, points leader Ryan Dolan and Rich Smith. Jeff Tharp kept the pressure on leader Brian Culbertson long enough to force the leader to make a slight bobble and hand over the lead in Pro Stock action. After chasing Culbertson for the first twelve laps, Tharp finally got the break he needed to slip underneath for the lead when Culbertson bounced slightly off the cushion in the first corner. Culbertson held on to second underneath the checkers ahead of Jim Borkus, Jeff Valentine and Ty Kleiner. Jerry Merkes topped the Hobby Stocks after a wild last lap that saw leader Mark Massey slip back to third in a wild scramble for the lead. Larry Benn came home second ahead of Massey, Tom Boyes and TJ Leslein. Brad Strang topped Chris Hinrichs and Ray Fawcett in Fun Car action. Racing action resumes this Friday, July 27th at the Palace of Speed. Hot laps are scheduled for 7 pm with racing to follow.
