Eckert Grabs First 2005 WoO Victory at Farley Speedway
June 1, 2005
Farley,IA 6-1-05

Rick Eckert of York,PA became the sixth driver in the 2005 season to visit the World Of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series YJ Stinger® Victory Lane after grabbing the $10,000 to win "Farley 50" at Farley Speedway in Farley,IA. Starting from the pole aboard the Raye Vest Excavating/J&J Steel No. 24 Raye Vest owned Rocket Chassis/Cornett Racing Engines Ford Taurus, "Scrub" powered into the lead at the drop of the green flag leading all 50 laps around the "Palace Of Speed". Fourth starting Dale McDowell finished in the runner-up spot, 3.849 seconds behind Eckert, with outside pole sitter Shannon Babb third, 24th starting Steve Francis fourth and 17th starting Dan Schlieper fifth. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Brian Birkhofer in sixth trailed by Steve Boley, 13th starting Darrell Lanigan, Curt Martin and Chub Frank.

Eckert and Babb brought the 24 car starting field to the green flag with Eckert winning the drag race into turn one and quickly established a lead over McDowell, Boley, Babb and John Vandenberg at the end of the first circuit. Boley worked his way back past McDowell on lap 2 with Vandenberg taking fourth from Lanigan on lap 8. Eckert enjoyed a huge lead over his pursuers when he entered lapped traffic on lap 11. The races first of three caution periods occurred on lap 13 when Don O'Neal suffered a flat right rear tire. Current World Of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series point leader Billy Moyer also went pitside at this point for new rear rubber.

Eckert again pulled out to a healthy margin on the double-file restart. McDowell worked his way past Boley for the second spot one lap after the restart with Lanigan blasting past both Vandenberg and Babb and into fourth. Babb regained the fifth spot from Vandenberg the next circuit and then took fourth from Lanigan the next time around. Babb continued his torrid pace using the high groove to snare third from Boley on lap 17.

All eyes were on Francis who had broken into the top ten by lap 20. The "Kentucky Colonel" worked his way into the top five on lap 23. Babb meanwhile continued to use the high-line moving past McDowell and into second on lap 24. The top ten rundown at the halfway mark had Eckert comfortably in the lead followed by Babb, McDowell, Francis and Boley with Lanigan sixth, Birkhofer seventh then Schlieper, Martin and Darren Miller.

With the laps clicking off Eckert found himself behind several lapped cars allowing Babb to close to within three car length of the leader but the track opened up for the leader when Vandenberg slowed to a stop off of turn four to bring out the caution on lap 39. Two more laps were completed before the caution was waving again for debris on the frontchute.

Eckert put it on cruise control for the remaining laps leaving Babb and McDowell to dice it out for the runner-up spot. McDowell closed to the back bumper of Babb as the field completed lap 47. McDowell shot underneath of Babb exiting turn two to take the runner-up spot at lap 48 but Eckert was too far ahead for any challenege to his lead.

Eckert was relieved to finally get into YJ Stinger® Victory Lane. "Finally. Nine races in and we finally get to victory lane. Hopefully it was just late getting here and we can get a whole bunch of 'em in the next couple of weeks. The car was really good. It was really good early when the track was slippery. The track started taking rubber late in the race but the car was still very good. I could change lanes and I think that's why we were better than the other guys. They couldn't really switch lanes but I could and still go good."

McDowell of Chickamauga,GA was happy with his second place finish aboard the Larry Shaw Race Cars/J&J Steel No. 17M Dale McDowell Racing Rocket Chassis-Shaw Race Cars/Racetek Engines Pontiac Grand Prix. "The race track was really racy there to begin with. Rick and myself were running about the same speed and Boley was right there too. When we had that caution I was able to roll by on the outside and made up a little bit of ground on Rick. Then Shannon found that outside. That outside started to get a little traction and started to rubber up a little bit down there in three and four. Shannon got by me and I just had to pretty much had to ride in line at that point in time. Rick moved up and we were all in line and then Shannon got to pushing there late in the race. I think maybe he went with softer tires or something. We were able to get by him but we didn't have anything for Rick. My hats off to those guys and we'll try and get 'em at Lincoln hopefully."

Babb of Moweaqua,IL was realistic with his third place finish. The driver of the Car City/Karl Chevrolet No. 18 Arkansas Motors C.J. Rayburn Race Cars/Jay Dickens Racing Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo said, "Rick was good all night long. I think his car was more maneuverable than mine. Right there at the end I started shoving. Halfway through the race I could hide it. Well, it started to latch down more and I couldn't hide it anymore. Dale got by me there but I'm glad it was a 50 lap race and not any longer because we just kept getting tighter."

Tim McCreadie topped the 31 car field during time trials turning a blistering 18.910 second lap at 95.188mph. Heat race wins fell to Vandenberg, Eckert, Babb and McDowell. Schlieper copped the "B" Main event while the Pole Dash fell to Eckert.
